House Moving: Step-by-Step Plan and Tips
In short: moving a house is a bigger job than moving an apartment: there are more belongings, plus the shed, garage, basement and garden furniture. With a good plan a house can be moved in one day. Here is a step-by-step plan and tips to make a house move go smoothly.
How moving a house differs from moving an apartment
- There are usually noticeably more belongings than in an apartment of the same size.
- Besides the rooms, the basement, attic, garage and shed have to be emptied.
- Heavy items: garden furniture, a grill, tools, gym equipment, sometimes a piano or a safe.
- There is often more room for the vehicle in front of a house, but a narrow driveway can stop a large vehicle.
House moving plan step by step
- Make an inventory room by room – write down the large furniture and estimate the number of boxes. Do not forget the basement, attic and garage.
- Get rid of what you do not need – the fewer things, the cheaper the move. Old furniture and construction waste can be removed.
- Ask for a quote – send a list of items or photos so we can choose the right vehicle and number of movers.
- Pack gradually – start with the basement, attic and seasonal items.
- Prepare the garden and garage – empty the fuel from the lawnmower and trimmer, clean the garden furniture.
- Moving day – large furniture and boxes first, fragile items last.
How much does moving a house cost
Moving a house is charged by the hour, like an apartment move: two movers and a 21 m³ box van cost 96 €/h on weekdays. For a bigger house you often need 3–4 movers or two vehicles to finish in one day. On the outskirts of Tallinn and in Harju County travel time is added. Example prices: how much does moving cost.
What to tell the movers in advance
- whether the vehicle can reach the house and how far things have to be carried;
- whether there are heavy items – a piano, safe, stone bathtub, gym equipment (items over 80 kg are special lifts);
- whether large furniture has to be dismantled and assembled in the new home;
- whether packing or boxes are needed too.
