How to Move Furniture: Wardrobes, Sofas and Beds
In short: large furniture is easiest to move dismantled, well packed and with the right tools. Here are tips on how to move wardrobes, sofas, beds and other furniture so that nothing gets scratched or broken.
Before the move: measure and plan
- Measure the largest furniture and the width of the doors, corridors and lift in both places.
- Decide what goes and what does not – old furniture can be removed.
- Think through where each item goes in the new home so it does not have to be lifted twice.
How to move different furniture
Wardrobes and closets
Empty the wardrobe, take out the doors and shelves and, if possible, dismantle it completely. Put the screws and parts in a bag and label it. Pack sliding doors separately so the glass or mirror does not break.
Sofas and armchairs
Remove the legs and cushions if possible. Wrap the sofa in film so the fabric does not get dirty and protect the corners. Check in advance that the sofa fits through the door – if not, it has to be lifted through a window.
Beds and mattresses
Dismantle the bed frame and wrap the mattress in film or a mattress bag. A mattress must not be folded or bent upright for long.
Tables and chairs
Remove the table legs and wrap a glass top in bubble wrap and cardboard. Chairs can be stacked, with the legs protected by film.
Antique and custom-made furniture
Polished surfaces need soft protection – blankets, corrugated cardboard and corner protectors. Do not put tape directly on the surface.
