Plasterboard Sizes, Weight and Types – and Lifting to the Floor
In short: a standard plasterboard is 1200 mm wide, 2400–3000 mm long and 12.5 mm thick and weighs about 25–28 kg. Boards sold in Estonia are marked with the type letters A, H, F, D, I and R. Below you will find plasterboard sizes, weights and types in one place – and how to get a large number of boards up to your floor without the hassle.
Plasterboard sizes
| Dimension | Common values |
|---|---|
| Width | 1200 mm (less often 600 and 900 mm) |
| Length | 2000, 2400, 2500, 2600, 2700 and 3000 mm |
| Thickness | 6.5 / 9.5 / 12.5 / 15 / 18 / 25 mm |
| Most common board | 1200 × 2600 × 12.5 mm |
Exact sizes depend on the manufacturer (Knauf, Gyproc, Siniat and others) – check them in the shop or on the manufacturer’s website before ordering.
Plasterboard weight
| Board | Weight per m² | One board 1200 × 2600 mm |
|---|---|---|
| 9.5 mm | approx. 7 kg | approx. 22 kg |
| 12.5 mm standard | approx. 8–9 kg | approx. 25–28 kg |
| 12.5 mm moisture-resistant | approx. 9 kg | approx. 28 kg |
| 15 mm fire-resistant | approx. 12–13 kg | approx. 37–40 kg |
These are approximate values; the exact weight is in the manufacturer’s data sheet. A typical pack holds about 50–60 boards, so one pack weighs 1.3–1.7 tonnes.
Plasterboard types
| Letter | Type | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| A | Standard board | Partition walls and ceilings in dry rooms |
| H | Moisture-resistant (usually green) | Bathrooms, kitchen walls, basements |
| F | Fire-resistant (usually pink or red) | Fire walls, stairwells, technical rooms |
| D | Higher density | Better sound insulation |
| I | Harder surface | Corridors and walls that take knocks |
| R | Reinforced | Walls for hanging heavy items |
The letters are combined – for example, DFH2IR is a dense, fire-resistant, moisture-resistant, hard-surface and reinforced board.
Plasterboard thickness guide
- 12.5 mm – partition walls and ceilings in an ordinary apartment or house.
- 15 mm – taller walls, better sound and fire protection.
- 2 × 12.5 mm – a double layer when better sound insulation or fire resistance is needed.
- 6.5 and 9.5 mm – curved surfaces, renovation and covering old walls.
Fire rating of plasterboard
Plasterboard itself is an almost non-combustible material (reaction to fire usually A2-s1,d0). The fire resistance of a wall or ceiling – for example EI 30 or EI 60 – depends on the whole construction: the type and number of boards, the frame and the insulation. To achieve it, follow the manufacturer’s certified system and the project.
Lifting plasterboard to the floor
Buying plasterboard is easy when you know the sizes. It gets difficult when 60 boards have to go up a narrow staircase to the fifth floor. The boards are longer than most corridors and landings, each weighs 25–40 kg, and both the boards and the walls must stay intact. Many shops and transport companies only deliver to the front of the building.
We lift plasterboard and other building materials to the floor and right into the room. Our team does this every day, knows how to handle narrow stairwells and spiral stairs and stacks the boards so they do not break.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Lifting building materials to the floor | 48 €/h per worker, minimum 2 h |
| Pick-up from the shop + lifting (2 movers + van) | 84 €/h |
Prices include VAT. More: lifting service to the floor and special lifts.
How lifting works
- Send the address, floor, lift and staircase details and the number and size of the boards.
- We tell you how many workers are needed and roughly how long it takes.
- We arrive at the agreed time – the boards can already be in front of the building, or we pick them up from the shop.
- We carry the boards up and stack them in the agreed place.
Frequently asked questions
What are the standard plasterboard sizes?
The most common plasterboard is 1200 mm wide, 2400–3000 mm long and 12.5 mm thick. Boards are also sold in 6.5, 9.5, 15, 18 and 25 mm thicknesses.
How much does one plasterboard weigh?
A standard 12.5 mm board weighs about 8–9 kg per square metre, so a 1200 × 2600 mm board weighs about 25–28 kg. A 15 mm fire-resistant board weighs about 37–40 kg.
What is the difference between green and pink plasterboard?
Green (H) is a moisture-resistant board for wet rooms; pink or red (F) is a fire-resistant board for fire-rated constructions.
Can you pick up the plasterboard from the shop?
Yes. We pick up the boards from the hardware store with a van or box van and lift them to the floor right away: 2 movers and a van cost 84 €/h.
How much does lifting plasterboard to the floor cost?
Lifting building materials costs 48 €/h per worker, minimum 2 hours.
